Why I Joined PABA - An Ally's Perspective by Barbara Ann Hart
I have been a PABA member for three years, and this year is my first on PABA’s board. I joined as a small business owner wanting to improve my business. I stay because I think of PABA as “family.” There are several reason for my continued support of this organization, some are business related, while others are personal.
From a business perspective, I joined PABA to advance my personal interaction with other business people. Because PABA is composed of LGBTQs, this discourse is conducted in a safe and friendly atmosphere. The welcome is genuine, hugs are warm and comforting, and one can truly be oneself without judgment or criticism.
In addition to business networking, a PABA member can be assured that membership indicates a business that is part of, or is aligned with, the LGBTQ Community. We know that those who support the Community will receive both business and recognition. There is a “right back atcha" attitude that becomes a signature for acceptance in the Community and celebrates the beauty of those who are within.
Aside from the business possibilities, I have a personal reason for my membership in PABA - I am accepted for who I am. That is really important to me. I have been a member of other business groups, and have always felt judged for how I dress or present myself, and most importantly, how my personal beliefs had to be “closeted” so I could get along with the other members.
As a PABA member and Ally, I support the Community both emotionally, financially, and economically to drive business to the members of this Community. In this way, I am giving back to the Community that has given so much to me. I can’t think of a better place to be.
I am honored to be on the PABA board, where I am working to make this organization even more effective and attractive to its members and the Community.
